Region

Definition

The region is a large geographic area that contains characteristic assemblages of natural ecological communities that are the product of broad influences of climate patterns. This scale is important because it is these climate patterns and natural land covers that are the primary controls on all spatial scales of hydromorphological processes.

Delineation criteria

Differences in main climatic variables and distribution of main vegetation types as shown in maps delineated at European scale

Methods and data sources

The region can be identified from online maps and publications. The European Environment Agency's biogeographic region map is recommended, but other regionalisations are also appropriate (e.g. http://www.globalbioclimatics.org)
