Key features of the case study

The Cadagua River has eroded both banks next to the village of Villasana de Mena, in the province of Burgos. Due to this situation the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico, the basin organism responsible for fluvial management, decided to carry out the defences of the river banks.

    Site description

Cadagua River has a length of 7000 meters and a basin surface of 585 Km2. The channel width is around 10 meters. The river discharge is around 1,3 m3/s, and a stream power of 38.2 kg m s-3. The substrate consists of clay and gypsum. The vegetation is composed by a mixed riparian forest (Alnus glutinosa and Salix sp.) and grassland.

    Measures selection

The aims of the project were:

    • Protection of riber banks
    • Restoration of fluvial corridor
    • Recreation of aquatic habitats

The measures chosen to achieve these objectives comprised removal of hard and artificial substrate form the river bed and embankments. The banks were reprofiled to give them more stability, and bioengineering techniques were used to revegetate the margins for facilitate the development of the riparian vegetation.

Works of reprofiling the river banks
enbankments and artificial substrate in the river bed
The state of the river banks after the restoration

    Success criteria

The ideal situation was achieving a continous riparian forest with absence of enbankments and hydraulic infrastructures

    Ecological response

    Hydromorphological response

Monitoring before and after implementation of the project

Bank stability and riparian vegetation were assessed in the first stages of the project design. However no monitoring program was designed or has been implemented.

    Socio-economic aspects

The total budget was of 1.075.719,90 €, financed by the Spanish Ministry of the Environment. The erosion of the river margins and the loss of soil involved risk for the houses placed near the river. One of the main reasons to execute this project was to reduce and avoid damages to the infrastructues and the local population.
