River restoration is commonly planned and designed in a site-specific manner, typically related to particular constructions and local responsibilities. However, a broader view at the catchment and a prioritization of measures at the catchment scale often identifies better solutions and more suitable sites nearby or in tributaries. For example, in navigable rivers restoration cannot touch the fairway, which strongly limits the application of instream habitat enhancement measures, but those measures could be easily realized in nearby non-navigated side channels or tributaries.
