REFORM River Restoration Wiki (Main page under contruction!)

Welcome to the REFORM River Restoration Wiki, a knowledge tool that addresses the challenges to reach the ecological objectives for rivers as required by the EU Water Framework Directive. The contents is available through the menu (left) or through the links on this main page.

The REFORM wiki is work in progress. It is filled as the deliverables of the REFORM project become available during the period 2012-2015.

Knowledge for river restoration

The categories below contain links to the main knowledge fields in the wiki.

Hydrology and morphology

Information on the hydromorphological indicators for the WFD.
Biological Quality

The biological quality elements of the WFD.
River Characterisation

A Multi-scale Hierarchical Framework for River Characterisation that facilitates River Restoration planning.
Pressures

The main hydromorphological pressures affecting European freshwater systems, with links to example case-studies.
Measures

Information on sixty restoration and rehabilitation measures with links to example case-studies.
Ecosystem Services (ES)

Description of ES in river environments. (Under construction).
EU Directives

Description of the main EU directives and information sources. (Under construction).

Know-how for river restoration (Case studies)

The case studies presented provide practitioners with valuable information about (1) the applicability of different measures, (2) what measures mitigate which pressures and (3) possible effects on hydro-morphology and biology when a project is evaluated.

Evaluation of planning and design (Tools)

Getting insight in a river system is the key to effective restoration planning. The category 'Tools' provides information on available tools for river assessment and river modelling.

A collection of tools for river restoration planning and design. Sub categories are Hydro-morphological Assessment methods and Hydromorphological models.

Linking Case studies, Knowledge and Tools

De REFORM-wiki contains three main parts: know-how (case studies), knowledge and evaluation (tools) that are all interlinked as shown in the figure below. In practice this means:

  • Every restoration measure case study contains links to the WFD hydro-morphological quality elements; WFD biological quality elements; pressures and measures relevant for that case study.
  • Every listed pressure under Category:Pressures shows all the case studies that mitigate that pressure.
  • Every listed measure under Category:Measures shows all the case studies that apply that restoration measure.
  • Every tool listed is linked to the WFD Hydro-morphological and WFD Biological quality elements in Category:HYMOQE and Category:BQE.

How to edit the wiki-pages?

General information about how to work with the wiki language can be found in the World Wide Web. Some useful references are:

Particular instructions about how to add information to the systems are provided in the User's Manual:

The REFORM web-based tool is a knowledge and information system relating hydromorphology and ecology of European rivers and has been developed as part of the projects REFORM and FORECASTER funded by the European Commission, IWRM-Net and Delft Cluster.
