Natural rivers adapt their shapes dynamically in response to natural changes or human interventions. These shapes do not necessarily comply with riverscapes designed according to esthetic principles, focusing on mere forms rather than the underlying processes. Gardened rivers may be unsustainable in high-energy environments that easily change by erosion and sedimentation. Restoration is progressively moving away from esthetic designs to objective-based strategies. Proper design and planning of such restoration projects require trained fluvial morphologists with a background in geomorphology or hydraulic engineering.
