Cadagua River. Restoration and bank protection in the Cadagua River at Villasana de Mena (Burgos).
Key features of the case study
The Cadagua River has eroded both banks next to the village of Colunga, in the region of Asturias. Due to this situation the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico, the basin organism responsible for fluvial management, decided to carry out the defences of the river banks.

Measures selection
Success criteria
The ideal situation was achieving a continous riparian forest with absence of enbankments and hydraulic infrastructures
Ecological response
Hydromorphological response
Monitoring before and after implementation of the project
Bank stability and riparian vegetation were assessed in the first stages of the project design. However no monitoring program was designed or has been implemented.
Socio-economic aspects
The total budget was of 1075700 €, financed by the Spanish Ministry of the Environment. The erosion of the river margins and the loss of soil involved risk for the houses placed near the river. One of the main reasons to execute this project was to reduce and avoid damages to the infrastructues and the local population.
